Maria Barton, Indian River, MI Maria, owner of Star Rug Company, is best known for her primitive style, her wonderful whimsical primitive patterns and antique reproductions. Her well-known signature pieces are Primitive Halloween people and Sheep rugs. In this class Maria will help you create a rug that is primitive in nature using hand dyed and textured wools in #8 cut or larger. You can work on one of Maria’s designs, your own design or another designer’s pattern. She has been hooking for over 16 years and has not only written articles for Rug Hooking Magazine and Wool Street Journal, but was recognized for her rugs by Early American Life in both 2006-07.
Maggie Bonanomi , Lexington, MO owns Simply Butternut. While her background is in textile design, she loves wool! For almost 10 years, she contributed designs to the Need’l Love books. Her book “With These Hands” (a Kansas City Star Book) was released July 2008. And now she is hard at work on her second Kansas City book which is due out this fall. Her heart is with primitive designs and she prefers wide cut and tear for her own hooking. She will share her passion for color and texture as well as her inspirations. She has a collection of designs to choose from, including Crow Hill featured Oct 05 Wool Street Journal.
P.D. Hankamer, Hankamer, TX This native Texan is known for her love of anything primitive, but especially primitive rugs. She has experience with smaller cuts as well as different techniques. She started her teaching career at the Winedale Retreat 7 years ago by teaching the beginner and novice class. She not only teaches you how to have fun and learn about textured wools but can assist with your technique especially if you have never had a professional teacher. If you have never been to a camp before, she is the perfect teacher for you to start with. Her work has been featured in Creating Antique Look in Hand Hooked Rugs, ATHA and Wool Street Journal.
Jayne Hester, Kinderhook, NV www.kinderhookbandb.com A fabulous primitive teacher also known as the “Queen of Neutrals.” Using bright, light and dark values of all neutral textures she creates an early look in her rugs. Prefers cuts 8, 8.5, 9 and 10. Although you will understand the beauty of neutral hues achieved with the use of grays, browns, beiges, sand and cream, you can use soft color in this class. Any commercial pattern may be used, but needs to be strong bold design for best result. She has been listed in Early American Life’s Directory of top 200 crafts people, featured in RHM and has been a judge for Celebrations.
Carrie Martin, Covington, LA Carrie was not only educated in textiles and design, but is also a milliner, designer and dressmaker. (So she has great finishing techniques and secrets.) She enjoys keeping the process fun while finding each student’s specific strength. Color, color, color is her mantra. Her classes love her daily mini-lectures and her sharing of ideas about adding borders of braiding or penny rugs appliqué. She most enjoys wide cut shaded rugs and opening the door to using wide cuts while achieving a shaded look. Her rugs can be primitive or more colorful—depending on the student’s choice. She has been rug hooking for 15years, was 2007 ATHA Biennial Chairwoman and teaches at numerous rug camps.
Kris Miller, Howell, MI www.spruceridgestudios.com Kris, a pattern designer, is owner of Spruce Ridge Studios and is on the ATHA Board--serving as Historian. She exclusively teaches and hooks primitives and wide cuts with a heavy emphasis on textured wool without shading. This class will encourage freedom to explore and play with different wools as Kris uses new and recycled wools as well as antique paisley in her hooking. You may work on any commercial pattern or on your own design. Her work has been featured in “Celebrations,” Country Marketplace Magazine and Rug Hooking Magazine. She has won Best of Show 4 times at county fairs along with numerous ribbons at Michigan State Fair and Sauder Village Exhibit.
Kim Nixon, Maryville,TN Although she is known for her footstools, this will not be just a class in upholstery. Class will be centered on color and design and how that works when making something 3 dimensional. She will help you make your piece personal whether you are working on a rug or a footstool in this class. You can order footstool and pattern (or a blank to design your own.) A Master’s in Fine Art and her background as a painter make her an excellent teacher of color use. She has numerous awards including several Celebrations, Arrowmont School of Crafts, Tennessee Artist Biennial Show, as well as articles published in “Rug Hooking Magazine.” She’ll have water-color like wools to tempt you to create a more painterly result. |
